Lassie, network television’s canine star, has joined Smokey Bear as a U.S. Forest Service poster star. Lassie’s assignment? To combat the tidal bore of litter from the recreation earthquake. Hopefully, the popular collie’s campaign will be as successful as Smokey’s efforts to prevent forest fires.

At a White House garden ceremony, Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson was presented with the first 50,000 posters portraying Lassie placing a piece of litter where it belongs – in a litterbasket. To be displayed in forest and park campgrounds and other recreation areas, the poster – designed for Keep American Beautiful, Inc., by University of Nevada art professor Craig Sheppard – was inspired by a Lassie episode. In that show, Lassie helped rescue a raccoon from a can discarded by a careless camper.
